The LAST Day of Kindergarten illustrated by Sachiko Yoshikawa Two Lions Publishing, 2011 (formerly Marshall Cavendish) Minnesota Book Award Finalist Scholastic Book Club bestseller |
A little girl is sad that kindergarten is coming to an end. She wishes it were the first day again, when everything was exciting and new and there was such a fun year ahead. But then she realizes that graduating is exciting, too, and maybe first grade won’t be so bad after all!
REVIEWS
[T]his is a reminder of how much fun kindergarten was: your own cubbyhole, the Halloween parade, losing a tooth,
“the last time we’ll ever sit criss-cross applesauce together.” But there is also the fledgling’s pleasure at shucking off the past—swabbing the desks, tossing out the stubbiest crayons, taking the pictures off the wall—and surging into the future.
Kirkus Reviews
Yoshikawa’s irresistibly sweet illustrations are perfect for children ready to emerge from the kindergarten cocoon and rejoice in their achievements.

I shared this book with my six year old niece on the eve of her graduation from Kindergarten. I had a feeling it would resonate with her and boy, was I right. The pages were filled with colorful illustrations and you could feel the energy of the children leap off of the pages as they discuss summer plans and look forward to 1st grade. My niece identified with the excitement and sadness of the year ending, since she identified with the way the character loved her teacher. We even changed the teacher's name to her teacher when we read it aloud.
